JERRY READ HANCOCK

Jerry Read Hancock was born in Ogden, Utah in 1938. He was raised on a dairy farm where he worked with his father and twin brother throughout his childhood. Upon graduated high school, he received  a Bachelor of Science degree from Weber State University with a degree in Art Education and History.

After college, Hancock was employed by the Weber School District as an art teacher. He taught art for 16 years, during which he was awarded "Utah Teacher of the Year." In 1973, he earned a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Brigham Young University. He continued working for the district as a guidance counselor. After 32 years in public education, Hancock retired in 1996.

In 1994, Hancock and several other artists purchased a vacant building in Ogden. His goal was to help support Ogden's redevelopment plans and to have a place to create his paintings. It took almost two years to renovate the blighted building into a viable studio space. Once completed, Hancock began painting with more serious goals in mind.

His early inspiration came from the domestic animals, such as horses and cattle, that he grew up around. His success as a painter fired him to focus on other subjects like American Indians, African families, stills, and landscapes. Jerry Hancock is known by his wide-variety of subjects he paints. His work is easily recognized from his detailed and colorful style.
